This post was most recently updated on May 4th, 2020

Traveling is one of the best things in life. After all, it is difficult to find anything better than enjoying free time with people you like and discovering new things! Traveling is wonderful at any time in life, but there are advantages for people over 60. In the United States, people spend their most productive decades taking short vacations and saving money to be able to travel for real after they retire (and that doesn’t happen before the ages of 60 to 65). If you are single, there are so many reasons why you should travel solo with a group.

The tourism industry is perfectly suited for the older traveler. What are organized tours, if not designed for the passenger to visit the attractions with the least possible effort? The right age to travel is any age, but how wonderful it is to be able to take advantage of your disposable income (now that you are no longer supporting children) or your free time (now that you have retired). You can visit new places and fulfill the dreams of a lifetime.

Traveling alone has its upside at any age, as you don’t have to consult anyone when you want to do something interesting. The downside is that you will have to make all the decisions on your own, including planning and research. However, you can combine the best of both worlds by traveling with a group of individual travellers. Here are 10 reasons why you should try travel solo with a group after 60:

1. Sharing the Excitement

You will have other people to share your travel experiences with. Someone to laugh with, do things with, share stories with, create memories with – and take photos of you having fun.

2. Making New Friends

You can arrive alone, but you will lose that feeling very quickly. You and everyone else in the group will have no choice but to introduce yourselves. Small groups bond very quickly, mainly because you are visiting a place of common interest.

3. Feeling Safer

There is security in numbers. studies have shown that you are less targeted when traveling with a group than alone. Everyone takes care of each other in a group.

4. Not Feeling Alone

Loneliness can be dangerous to health and is linked to increased cholesterol, depression and high blood pressure. You will not experience any feeling of loneliness in a group of individual travellers. The camaraderie and shared experiences will lift your spirits.

5. Still Enjoying Your Privacy

Free time will be included for you to do what you want. You can choose to have some activities alone or bring a friend you made in the group. Either way, you can still enjoy your privacy in a travelling group.

6. No Need for Planning

  1. Group tours are already planned for you with a daily itinerary. When you join a group, someone handles all the logistics. The leader of your group takes care of all the details. You only have to sit back, relax and enjoy.

7. Saving on Rates

Traveling with a group is much more economical. With lower bulk rates negotiated for hotel rooms, airfare, cruises and discounted events, the savings are passed on to you at a better price than you would get if you were traveling alone.

8. Having Guidance

Specialized guides will be at your disposal to answer all your questions about the history and culture of the places you’re visiting.

9. Challenging your Comfort Zone

Your new travel friends will give you the courage to leave your comfort zone and experience things you would never do alone.

10. Not Paying More for Travelling Solo

Traveling with a group will help you avoid paying the dreaded single supplement. Individual travel companies can pair you with another roommate of the same sex, so you don’t pay double for a hotel room or cruise cabin. Some cruises and tours will not have a single supplement for anyone.

For seniors who are not interested in solo travel, joining a travel club can help you find interesting trips to take. Some senior travel clubs exist for the sole purpose of organizing trips for members. Trip lengths and destinations vary.
