My friends are a community of tight-knit women, including many mothers, mothers-to-be, and grandmothers. As a result I often get invited to baby showers, and I’m tired of bringing the same old baby gifts. I’m really thrilled when I can find something new and particularly useful. Or something that’s a perfect fit for the baby and family — something that will be treasured for a long time. Recently I welcomed a new grandchild into our own family, and that really motivated me to be on the lookout for special gifts.
Why gifts for traveling mothers?
Since I am always encouraging people to travel, I like to find gifts that make travel easier. Heaven knows it’s hard enough to travel with a baby! Trying to figure out naps, diaper changing, feeding, and keeping a child clean and happy are difficult at home, let alone in an ever-changing environment. Let me share with you a few of my favorite baby gifts for traveling mothers from Uncommon Goods.
Reusable squeeze bottles
I love these reusable silicone pouchesthat are perfect for storing smoothies, purees, applesauce, or yogurt. They are spill-proof, making them a lot better than the typical squeeze pouch that gives your child the opportunity to squirt his yogurt to his heart’s desire!
Portachair Harness
I’m not sure why I never had one of these for my own children, because it would have come in handy. This portable chair harness attaches to most chairs and gives a 5-month+ baby a secure place to sit…at the airport or in a restaurant.
Pee Pee Teepees
Sometimes the best baby gifts are the practical ones. If you’ve ever tried to change your baby boy’s diaper on your lap in an airplane, you know you just have to have these little “teepees” to protect from that unexpected stream. Enough said!
Meet Milton
What a fun way to introduce a child to foreign foods — let ‘Milton’ be the guinea pig. This is a clever way for a child to feed Milton to see what his reaction is. Then he’s more likely to try it himself! A fun book accompanies Milton and helps motivate the child to try something new.
Play and Go Storage Mat
With this storage mat, you can set your baby down on a clean surface with toys to play with. When you’re done, just cinch up the mat to hold and carry the toys. So much easier that way! So handy at the airport gate while waiting to board…or at the hotel.
Hip Kids Sunglasses
You can protect your little one’s eyes from sun damage with cute sunglasses specially shaped to fit little noses and little faces. And you can use an included silicone band to keep the sunglasses from getting lost. I’m thinking this is one of the best baby gifts, especially for a mother who is taking her kids to the beach.
Mini Happy Mat
Children can be super picky about their eating utensils. When you’re traveling, that’s a good time to bring a few things your child is familiar with. That’s why I really like this happy plate that smiles at you, has sections to keep different foods from touching, and also has a suction cup on the bottom to keep it from slipping. You can even attach it to an airplane tray or take it to a restaurant.
Foot Sole Massage
I hesitate to suggest this as a baby shower gift because it’s really more for the mother than for her baby! I once rolled a chilled can of soda under my feet for relief, after walking 11 miles in one day. And I wasn’t even carrying a baby. What mother wouldn’t love this gift that soothes her feet with chilled soapstone balls and gives them a much-appreciated foot massage?
Why Uncommon Goods? Do you ever wish you could find a store that reflected you? One that sold things you really liked and promoted designers with great products? Oh! And didn’t charge an arm and a leg for the privilege of sharing in their vision? I may have just found that store. Only it’s not a store at all. Even better, it’s a website with products accessible to anyone.
I love that Uncommon Goods specializes in handmade products with impeccable craftsmanship. Or manufactured products that are truly unique. I hope you’ve liked the gift ideas I’ve highlighted here.
Note: I receive nothing if you buy any of the products in this article (except the satisfaction of helping you). I did receive some compensation for taking the time to find and feature my favorite baby shower gift ideas.
If you’re choosing baby gifts for mothers who like to take road trips, be sure to share these articles with them:
That harness is awesome! Even when I’m not traveling, I’ve seen friends struggle to get a baby chair at restaurants, often just asking for a booth and wedging the entire car seat into the booth as an alternative. The harness looks sooo much easier to deal with, and I doubt it takes up a lot of room in a suitcase or day bag. Also, I had to say that Pee Pee Teepees made me laugh. What a great name!
This is a brilliant post Tami, wish I’d had it before I took my son on his first flight! I was an independent traveller for years and now my son is 1.5, so its a whole new ball game in travel for me! The Teepee is my favorite 🙂 totally saving this for our next trip!
